Rroo'tahnian
From FnorDoM
Rroo'tahnians are a race of anthropoids native to Rroo'tah. Compared to other living organisms on Rroo'tah, Rroo'tahnians have a highly developed brain capable of abstract reasoning, language, and introspection. This mental capability, combined with an erect body carriage that frees their upper limbs for manipulating objects, has allowed Rroo'tahnians to make far greater use of tools than any other species.

The baseline Rroo'tahnian is humanoid, but with a much wider range of skin colors. Minor regional mutations, such as tiny horns, fanged teeth, claws, or patches of scaly skin, are not uncommon. Check the region for the specific type of mutation. Various ports of call, particually the capital, have all kinds, but some regoins only have specific types. Of course, as Rroo'tah has a gravity of 1.5 G's, all native lifeforms are naturally adapted for this sort of environment [most Rroo'tahnians are 5' tall and weigh around 206 pounds, for example, and the 'average' Rroo'tahnian is as strong as a very athletic human].
Notable Subspecies
- 'Avy'airs' - Not native to Upper Fnord, and still rare on that continent, this subspecies travels extensively and some can be found in the larger cities of Upper Fnordia. Similar mostly to the Skrikian's save instead of insect characteristics they retain those of a bird.
- 'Camazotz' - this subspecies has hands similar to an Earth bat, allowing them to glide. Their feet and hands are clawed, and their 'muzzles' jut out a bit more than normal. They also have acute hearing and smell & taste, short fur, sonar, and ultrasonic hearing. 4'10", 97 pounds (due to their hollow bones).
- 'It'naboo' - an amphibious, frog-like breed of Rroo'tahnian.
- 'Ket-tras' - a subspecies that seems to have some commonalities with raccoons and opossums. Though their strength is that of a 12-yr.-old human, and they are but 1'10" tall and weigh a meager 11 pounds, they are quite agile, are blessed with acute hearing and a prehensile tail, a 'flesh pocket' on their belly, fur, sharp teeth, and an innate '3D spatial sense'. Not surprisingly, most find work as technicians and mechanics, and a few 'families' of them can be found at Castle Fnord.
- 'Lemurians' - appear to be partly herpetic (snake-like). Known variations include - snake trunk in place of legs, snake tail in addition to legs, slitted eyes, scaley skin in a variety of colors & patterns, poisonous fangs, and a few appear to be snakes with the heads of a Rroo'tahnian.
- 'Narteps' - grey-green scaled subspecies with a skin flap stretching from wrist to ankle, enabling them to glide. Their feet are taloned, and their muzzles jut out more than the Camazotz.
- 'Natreps' - a subspecies seemingly 'designed' for combat. Strength of a star weightlifter, and with an inhumanly high pain threshold. Also suffers from a short lifespan [13/37/52/67 years]. Averages 5'5" tall and tip the scales at 263 pounds. For some reason they also lack any mutations that would not be deemed mammalian.
- 'The Nekos' - Any Rroo'tahnians with feline characteristics, quite common along the entire western coast of Upper Fnordia, and have spread to almost the middle of it. They have a wide range of possible mutations, but generally to qualify as a Neko one would have at least most of the following attributes: slitted eyes, enlarged canines, retractable claws in fingertips, triangular ears on the top of the head, balancing tail, short fur covering body, whiskers, very agile and fit (but 'only' as strong as an athletic human), enhanced flexibility, three sets of mammary glands, rejointed hind legs (walking on toes), rough textured tongue, enhanced olfactory (smell) and auditory (hear) senses (with less textorial (taste) and visual (sight)), lowlight vision, and an innate sense for causing others annoyance. Sadly, their lifespan is unusually short [mature at 6 yrs., they begin to feel the effects of old age at age 30; most die by age 39 but some have been known to live up to 57 yrs (all years are Terran years)]. Usually around 4'11" tall and 200 pounds (Rroo'than gravity).
- 'Skrikian' - this subspecies is actually rather close to the norm (that is Terran norm). Tall (6'10") and skinny (190 lbs) with a skin color in the lighter shades (from the rare transparent skin to a yellow, with a shade of green somewhere in the middle). Their mutations can range from compound eyes to almost working wings (insectile appearing, ranging from moth to dragonfly). They are usually subterranean and have highly developed brains. These brains, through training, have let them manipulate energy, either Ki, Magical, or Psionic (at time of research all three have been claimed and none have been disproved). This energy manipulation manifests in either levitation (allowing full flight despite vestigial wings), bioblasts, empathy, and matter manipulation. Two known colonies have been shown, the ruling class in the Tungly Wood, and the mining clans in the Caves of Thought.
- 'Sorqs' - a subspecies that seems to combine aspects of canines, rodents, and sharks. Strength of a football tackler, acute hearing, 'cast-iron stomach', track by smell, fur, sharp teeth, very rapid healing, bloodthirsty, disturbing (animal-like) voice, and a short lifespan [9/27/39/50 years]. Average 5'2" tall and 225 pounds.
- 'Tokka' - A squat and armored reptilian or amphibious subspecies. They are marked mainly by their beaks (being that of a turtle or a ceratops) and can have either a shell or a head frill, as well as a number of variations on reptilian tails.
- 'The Xanies' - A group of normal Rroo'tahnians that have wandered in and become permanent residents of the outer regions of The Forest of Madness. They have become throughly insane, but because of it have become somewhat adjusted to the low levels of random phenomenon that occur near the forest's edges. They are throughly out of their minds and act in irrational, unpredictable ways. Considered extremely dangerous being as they have no understanding of concern for their own safety and will use anything they can grab a hold of as weaponry. Also on rare occasions they can be found wandering outside of the forest searching for food and annoying wandering travelers. Strangely a population of Xanies has also been found around the out skirts of the Arctic Desert as well where they have developed some of the highest, and most insane, technology on the planet (reaching the age of gunpowder and steam engines).
Results of all inter(sub)species breeding are unknown at this time. However many have been categorized as being possible, producing either a mixture of the mutations (generally leaning toward the less extreme mutations). It is believed that all Rroo'thains at this point in time can interbreed, and it is encouraged that they do rather than split off into different species entirely. However due to the unusually high rate of mutation/evolution in this planet and the racial prejustice between subspecies it may be to late for some to rejoin the main species.
